5 Tips to keep Healthy this Christmas

5 Tips to keep Healthy this Christmas

Ah, it’s that time of year again!

Christmas… a very overindulgent time of year, where we kick back and tend to eat our body weight in food. It’s hard to keep healthy at Christmas, right? Chocolates, turkey and lots of naughty drinks. We all deserve to have some ‘us’ time at Christmas, but it’s still important to be mindful of what we are actually eating and drinking. Just because it’s downtime, doesn’t mean that your body doesn’t rely on you to keep it in tip-top condition.

I’m not suggesting that you ‘watch the waistline’, but look after your body so it can look after you throughout the festive season!

My 5 tips to keep you healthy over Christmas:

Keeping active over Christmas is important. Take the family out for a walk, or do the exercise you like. Christmas can be stressful, so the endorphins from exercise will raise your mood and you’ll make healthier food choices. It’s also a great excuse to get some tech-free time in with the family! Leave the phones at home and head out and about after a lovely meal.

    Stay hydrated!

Ha! Not with wine, beer, gin or whatever your tipple is but water is the KEY, this will aid digestion and keep the hunger at bay. Plus, you’ll fend off those festive hangovers and keep your skin looking fresh, despite the indulgence.

    Try not to pick!

There’s a lot of calories in mindless snacking. Have a good protein breakfast (smoked salmon and scrambled eggs anyone?) and this will keep you full until lunchtime. Keep eating regularly throughout the day. If you do feel a peckish nibble coming on, reach for nutty nibbles, dates, figs and fruity festive finger foods!

Getting lots of sleep is very important! If our bodies are not getting adequate zzzzzz’s then it releases the hunger hormone, ghrelin, which increases the appetite. Take Christmas as an opportunity to lie-in, or clock off early after a classic film (Love Actually… of course!).

Simple yoga stretches and deep breaths can help us calm the mind – try these when getting out of bed or when the thought of entertaining your entire extended family starts to give you the shakes. It will set you up for the day, the right way.

Don’t let Christmas get the better of you! It’s time to relax and enjoy yourself with your loved ones. Try not to stress (easier said than done!) and remember that a happy and healthy YOU is more than enough to please anyone.
