No More Bloodstains: How to Save your Knickers!
Bloodstains happen for women, it’s a fact of life. So you can imagine our delight when during our weekly search on Instagram for innovative new products to bring you, we came across Save My Knickers.
An incredibly effective, yet gentle stain remover to take care of nature’s little accidents, this innovative product is the first to be specifically developed for bloodstains. Meaning your best undies get to stay at the front of the drawer, all month long. Period Pants are officially a thing of the past.
Can we finally banish bloodstains for good?
Save My Knickers was created by Lucy, who works by day in the NHS as a Children’s Physiotherapist and is also a wife and mum to a 3-year-old. Like most of us, she was fed up with regularly ruining her underwear. So just a mere 18 months ago she decided she needed to find a solution.
HER caught up with Lucy to hear about the journey she’s been on to help keep our pants perfect.
LUCY, WE LOVE THE INSPIRATION BEHIND SAVE MY KNICKERS AND IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE THIS IS THE FIRST PRODUCT LIKE IT! TELL US ABOUT THE PROCESS. HOW LOND DID IT TAKE TO DEVELOP THE PRODUCT FROM SCRATCH?
Thank you! Part of what inspired Save My Knickers was that I was fed up with bloodstains ruining my undies and I couldn’t find anything already available that could successfully get rid of them. That’s when I decided I would try and create something myself that would work.
……….I experimented in the kitchen, countless pairs of undies later and I found something that worked! And then I got it to work again, and again, and again. It was only after, when I was sharing this discovery with friends and family that I realised I wasn’t the only person to have this problem. That’s when I realised I couldn’t keep this to myself and that’s when Save My Knickers was born.
……….This process took around 10 months, and then one of the other largest part of the product development was getting the branding right. Knowing nothing like this was already on the market, I knew I needed to get the look, feel and voice of the brand spot on...
HAS CHEMISTRY ALWAYS BEEN YOUR THING?
Haha! Most definitely not! I took A.S. level chemistry but got a D I think… I never actually disclose this to anyone as I am too embarrassed! There was too much maths involved for me; I moved schools between high school and 6th form. The 6th form I went to was a grammar school and much more academic than my comprehensive high school. I was pretty behind everyone else in my class from the start.
……….I can remember my Chemistry teacher looking at me so desperately as if to say “why don’t you get it?!”. I think Mrs Allen would be very shocked to hear about Save My Knickers!
One tube can save up to 20 pairs of pants from the rubbish heap
YOU’RE ALSO KEEN TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE ETHICALLY WITH SAVE MY KNICKERS. HOW DOES THE PRODUCT BRING AROUND POSITIVE CHANGE?
There are so many elements to how we’re bringing about positive change. There’s the environmental side; from being such a throwaway society, people are moving towards finding little ways to reduce the amount of waste they produce and their impact on the planet. Save My Knickers does exactly what it says on the recyclable cardboard tube and one tube can save up to 20 pairs of pants from the rubbish heap.
………Until now, bloodstains are just something that we accept as a part of life and that our knickers are destined at some point to become those sad time-of-the-month-just-in-case-pants. Or once they get stained they just get thrown away before they’ve had a chance to fulfil their full knicker life.
………..Knickers may seem like such a small item, but for some women it’s not just knickers that can get stained it’s pyjamas, bedding and clothing too.
………..We’ve also seen such a push for sustainable period products, whether it’s cups, reusable pads, period pants. Save My Knickers is also part of this push for sustainability.
………There is a shift too for those who are further along their eco journey to buy more ethically sourced and sustainable slow fashion products, but these do come with a higher price tag. Then either those more expensive pants only get to come out once in a blue moon or if you do wear them with pride it’s even more annoying when they become stained.
……….Periods aren’t something people look forwards to at the best of times and those sad old stained pants make us feel even less happy at an already not-so-fun time of the month. Also, conditions where heavy and irregular bleeding like Endometriosis are more common than we realise too.
……….Knowing you can rescue your knickers, pjs or bedding from those inevitable stains might seem like something small, but has a huge impact on someone’s self-esteem and confidence.
HOW HAS THE PANDEMIC AFFECTED THE LAUNCH OF SAVE MY KNICKERS?
The initial launch of our product was delayed due to the first lockdown affecting our supply chain, but there is always so much to work on behind the scenes in other areas of the business that this delay wasn’t the end of the world.
……….Once we were up and running in October last year, we started approaching local eco shops and we had a great initial response, however then the second lockdown hit, then Christmas and this was followed by lockdown number 3 so that’s been difficult. These little independent shops have so much on their plates at the moment that bringing in a new product to their stores isn’t at the top of their priority lists sadly.
……….On a positive side to the story, more people are shopping online and much more aware of supporting small and local businesses which is definitely in our favour.
WHERE CAN WE BUY IT AND WHERE CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE IT IN THE FUTURE?
Save My Knickers is currently available to buy online through our website. We’re also stocked in a few local shops in Oxfordshire and we’re part of a period box subscription service.
……….The goal is for Save My Knickers to be a period product essential in the same way a tampon or pad is. I’m so excited to see where the journey of Save My Knickers goes to next!
