This Girl Can Hampshire kicks off campaign for International Women's Day
This Girl Can Hampshire is encouraging women across the county to get active this International Women’s Day (Sunday 8 March), as they kick off their campaign to support the county’s women to embrace physical activity in their daily lives.
The campaign will feature stories of local women from a variety of backgrounds who have all found ways to overcome barriers to being active, as well as provide information about county-wide activities that women can take part in.
Developed by Sport England, This Girl Can is an inclusive initiative that encourages women at every level to embrace physical activity and sport.
More men take part in weekly physical activity than women at almost every age group in the UK
Research shows that many women are put off being physically active due to a fear of judgement – this might be about the way they look when they exercise, that they’re not good enough to join in or they should be spending more time on their families, studies or other priorities.
Led by local charity Energise Me, This Girl Can Hampshire includes over 40 physical activity providers and partners who want to inspire and support women to give physical activity a go. Activities featured in the Hampshire campaign will range from traditional sports such as netball and cycling to aerial hoop and roller derby, wheelchair dancing and buggy bootcamps. These are just a taste of the 1200+ sessions featured on the new Get Active Hampshire activity finder. See www.getactive.io for a full list of sessions, including those taking place over the International Women’s Day weekend.
Local Hampshire parkruns including Lymington, Southampton, Winchester and Basingstoke, will join parkruns from all over the world, by hosting a special event on Saturday 7 March, ahead of International Women’s Day the following day. Women are encouraged to join in the celebrations by bringing along a female friend, colleague or family member and walking, jogging, running or volunteering with a suggested purple dress code for the day. Energise Me is committed to making physical activity accessible to as many women as possible, whoever they are, and whatever their goal is. Membership of the This Girl Can Hampshire network is open to anyone who is passionate about getting women active. Further details can be found at www.energiseme.org/thisgirlcanhampshire
Sara Lock, Marketing and Communications Manager at Energise Me said:
“This Girl Can Hampshire is about helping local women feel confident to take part. National research shows that fear of being judged stop women from taking part in physical activity and sport. We’ve heard so many local stories that reinforce this. We want everyone in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to feel confident being active, in whatever way they choose and to be inspired by local role models to give physical activity a go.”
