Valentine's Day in Winchester
With Valentines Day fast approaching I’ve pulled together some ideas of ways to celebrate in our awesome city no matter what sort of a day you are looking for!
Start the day Right!
Why not begin the day with a delicious brunch; snuggle up together and sip a mimosa in Greens, feast on plump and fluffy pancakes at Josie’s or relax at The Dispensary Kitchen with a view of the Cathedral and some eggs and avo – perfect!
Round Table and a Round of Drinks!
Winchester has the most amazing history so if the sun is shining and you have the day free it could be a great opportunity to pop on your comfiest boots and go for a stomp around the city and take in some of the fantastic culture that’s on offer.
Start off at the top of town where you can visit the Great Hall and see King Arthur’s legendary Round Table. Afterwards why not wander down the high street, past King Alfreds statue and take a walk along the river by The Bishop on the Bridge. It’ll lead you round past Wolvesey Castle, by Jane Austen’s house and through to the Cathedral so you can dip into as much of the history of Winchester as you like.
If you’re getting chilly then there are a couple of cosy pubs on your route with some pretty great stories to tell – The Wykeham Arms dates back to 1755 and is rumoured to have once hosted Lord Nelson – find a snug corner by one of the open fires and try a local G&T from the Winchester Distillery. Further round your walk at the front of the Cathedral is The William Walker, which has been beautifully designed with lots of unique and quirky nods to the man it is named after – a diver who saved Winchester Cathedral from collapse – check out the copper light fittings in the style of old diving helmets and take a seat upstairs where the ceiling is covered in twinkly fairy lights. The view of the Cathedral is unbeatable!
A Getting-to-know-you Date
If you’re in the mood for an evening of fun and drinks rather than full on serious romance then look no further than Winchester’s go-to venue for all things Italian and delicious. Toscanaccio on Parchment Street is hosting a ‘Find the Wine You Love’ evening. They’re kicking off at 7pm with a lighthearted questionnaire to help them asses your most suited ‘partner in wine’! They’ll use your answers to put together a selection of wines from the shop for you to taste and hopefully find a new favourite, along with lots of laughs along the way. The staff will be there to give you some insights into how they make their recommendations and answer your questions. Tickets are £12 so snap them up here now!
If you’re not loved-up right now or just want to celebrate your love for your girlfriends then what better way than with drinks, pizza and a rom-com? Everyman Cinema is showing Notting Hill on Valentines Day, so grab your favourite ladies and settle down for a couple of hours of indulgence and giggles. The cinema has plush sofas and armchairs and a dreamy menu of pizzas, cocktails, build your own ice cream sundaes and fizz galore! What better excuse to spend Valentines Day with Hugh Grant?!
Wine and Dine
For a full blown romantic Valentine’s Day look no further than the stunning Chesil Rectory. It’s one of Winchester’s best preserved medieval buildings and is a stunning venue for a romantic evening. They have a sumptuous five course Valentines set menu for £55 per person so it’s the perfect way to really splash out and treat yourselves. With smoked salmon, scallops, wagu beef and chocolate torte amongst the treats on offer how can you say no?!
Whatever you chose to do – have a fabulous time!
