Winchester Fashion Week 2019 - A week in Pictures
Back for its 9th year, Winchester Fashion Week showcased over 92 events from talks and workshops, to pop-up shops. The week was run by Winchester Bid and sponsored by the University of Winchester, with around 50 Fashion, Marketing and Media students helping out across the week, including myself.
This was my first year helping out with Winchester Fashion Week, and it was so great to be able to see the week unfold with different events focusing around sustainability, charities and fashion.
It also gave me the chance to visit local and independent shops including The Hambledon and Mint Tea Boutique which are stores I rarely visit when I am in Winchester. It was really lovely to visit stores that I never usually would visit, as it gave me the chance to explore, and these stores had such a wonderful range of clothing and gifts. Plus the visual merchandising is just Instagram goals!
Fashion Forward Sustainability
Another place that I had not even heard of before the week was The Open House Deli. I ended up visiting here every day during Fashion Week as I found their merchandising amazing. All of their products are from sustainably sourced materials, and use environmentally friendly packaging, with products including beeswax straps which are used instead of clingfilm, shampoo bars and bamboo cutlery. As sustainability was a key topic for the week, it was great to be able to visit a store that is so passionate about making a change and a positive environmental impact. (You can see my write up on fashion-forward sustainability here.)
One of my favourite events during the week was the Tanqueray cocktail masterclass at Slug and Lettuce, which was so much fun! I have never made cocktails before, so it was really interesting to sit down and learn how they make them, as I am used to just seeing them made so quickly behind the bar. The Slug and Lettuce also hosted the wrap party on the Sunday night which was a magical way to end a fabulous week. For me, the Slug and Lettuce is definitely my go to place for drinks with the girls. The atmosphere is always lovely and calm, and they have recently decked out the Winchester one with pretty flowers, which makes it all that more seasonal and inviting.
One organisation that featured throughout the week that could not go unmentioned was Beauty Banks. Before this week, I did not know that Beauty Banks even existed, and now I am so glad that I do. In brief, Beauty Banks are the same as food banks, but they distribute beauty products instead to charities and shelters.
Beauty Banks exist to fight hygiene poverty as they take beauty donations, brand new or unsealed, repackage them, and send them off. They have had huge success so far, and they distribute the products to more than 125 charities around the UK, and it was only set up last year! It was so good to learn about the organisation, and just how bad hygiene poverty is, and that I myself can help fight it. HerHampshire’s Style Editor and WFW girl-about-town Jessica Eades collects donations on behalf of Beauty Banks, you can learn more about Jess here.
The Grand Finale
The grand finale catwalk show was another favourite for me, as it was so great to see the different businesses that have been helping out throughout the week come together and showcase some of their upcoming collections. There were various companies involved during the catwalk, including Jack Wills, Marks and Spencer, Fat Face and there were also collections from Winchester School of Art. As the week consisted of store visits, talks and workshops for me, it was wonderful to be able to attend the catwalk show and see the collections from different businesses in Winchester.
Winchester Fashion Week was a great opportunity to learn about businesses, charities, the subject around sustainability and the high street, as well as being able to try new things and visit new stores. Fashion week was a great way to end my time studying at Winchester, and it is a week that I will cherish.
